Seeking God's wisdom is essential not only for serving Him faithfully but also for placing the invitation to His Kingdom above everything else. The young successor of David, Solomon—the third and last king to reign over the United Kingdom of Israel—prays not for personal gain but for "an understanding heart" to govern God's people. His selfless request pleases the Lord, who grants him not only wisdom but also glory and riches, giving him far more than he had asked. God always hears humble prayers offered with sincere hearts.
Solomon's desire for a wise and discerning heart reveals the true foundation of authentic leadership. In Sacred Scripture, the heart is the center of the human person—the place where intentions are formed, decisions are made, and judgments are rendered. A heart filled with God's wisdom is therefore capable of governing His people with justice, compassion, and fidelity.
In the Gospel, Jesus, the eternal Wisdom of the Father, uses a series of parables to reveal the incomparable value of the Kingdom of Heaven. The first two parables—the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price—emphasize both the overwhelming joy experienced by those who discover the Kingdom and the decisive action they take in response. Filled with joy, they willingly sell everything they possess to obtain the treasure they have found. Their sacrifice is not a burden but a joyful response to having discovered something of infinitely greater worth. As Saint Paul beautifully expresses it: "Whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ" (Philippians 3:7).
Each of us is invited to imitate the merchant by renouncing everything that hinders us from fully embracing God's Kingdom. Only Jesus Christ can lead us into the Kingdom of Heaven, which is our ultimate destiny and the fulfillment of our earthly pilgrimage.
In the third parable, Jesus reminds us of the reality of the final judgment. Just as He taught in the parable of the weeds, a day of separation will come when the righteous and the wicked will be judged according to their response to God's grace.
May we continually seek God's wisdom, for it enables us to recognize the incomparable value of His Kingdom and to place it above all earthly possessions. May His Word and His commandments be the light that guides our steps toward eternal life. Today is not too late to welcome His message, follow His commandments, and respond generously to His call. The Lord, who has called us to become coheirs with His only begotten Son, patiently awaits our "yes."
